A personal note

Ever since I was a six year old I visited Willi Heiner’s studio. Artist’s studios such as his are alluring not only to kids. Strange objects that have been collected and stacked up over time, bizarre newspaper articles and reproductions, weird smells of oil paints and turps mixed with a black cigarette’s strong smell bedazzle the onlooker.

What fascinated me the most however was Willi Heiner’s keen perception in drawing. With just one confident line he effortlessly conjured up a scene.

He and my father were best friends in this provincial town called Bielefeld. They used to meet with visiting artists such as the conductors and soloists from the Oetker Hall’s concerts or the authors reading at «Fischer oder Pfeffer’s Bookstore» and performers such as Grock in the bar «Vahle». There Willi Heiner worked his charms and intellect widely influenced by French culture and thus became a leading figure of Bielefeld’s cultural life.

The painter’s oldest daughter became a stage designer and the oldest son an architect who met a young painter during his studies in Berlin. She too was the daughter of a painter and a prominent dancer. I like looking back at these times. It was the beginning of the sixties in Berlin. We would talk about new exhibitions and architecture during my visits and throughout my first terms at the Freie Universität Berlin. The conversations were always very involving, intellectual and emotional.

The reader may have guessed this text’s outcome by now and can relate to the very personal statement at the start. The oldest son of this marriage is Sebastian. His younger brother Hannes is very gifted too and has earned a reputation as a good artist and performer

With strong determination Sebastian Heiner has evolved as a painter. He was influenced by stage design and illustrations and supported by Klaus Fußmann from the HDK Berlin.

His subjects are always people. Stretched figures moving through the painting, gesturing and converging. The main components in Sebastian Heiner’s paintings are color and gesture. The color palette is made up of dark earthy tones. The impetus of the lines structure the field of vision. A painter through and through, Sebastian Heiner is a talent who expresses himself substantially while remaining focused.

Traditions can be a burden but they may also show the way. Being the grandchild and son of artists may have made the way too easy for some. To know how to take advantage of the situation is what he has in common with his young friend and gallery owner, also son of a famous artist.

Sebastian Heiner aims to work continuously, advancing his development and intensifying his topics remaining a painter throughout.
